Insightful thoughts about design and the web

Klok, a great time management tool

August 18th, 2008

Some weeks ago my friend introduced me to a relatively new time management tool named Klok. Despite the fairly “in your face” -name it is quite a handy tool for everyone interested in monitoring his or her use of time. Running with Adobe Air on your desktop, its sleek, black and fun to use.

I have tried out a handful of similar programs, but now I finally think that I found something that I’m going to stick with. The only thing i can complain a handful about is the quite hidden way of starting and stopping the timer. Despite this it is a cool and free tool that you all should check out.

Handy collection of freeware oldfashion fonts

August 7th, 2008

HPLHS offers a good (and free) small collection of old fonts remade into truetype. No opentype for pc, but there is no need to stare the gifthorse in the mouth. Originally designed for roleplayers who wanted to create authentic material for their games, it also serves well for designers looking for old typography. A selection of the fonts are totally free, but for a meager 20$ you can also buy the whole collection.

Use with caution, and you can do some good with them.

“…And wait, there is more! Order now and you will get the special, limited time only offer; the white space cleaner! Is your designer spending valuable space on that expensive ad of yours?…

Truly priceless. Go and check it out.

CMSMadeSimple reaches version 1.4

August 6th, 2008

Following my look at SkyBlueCanvas yesterday I today got the message that the good people at CMSMadeSimple released their latest version, 1.4. There seems to be alot going on in the community, and many are working hard with this program, so if you still have not tested this great open source CMS I advice you to give it a go. Version 1.4 “Jamaica” seems to have a whole bunch of new features, so even I am anxious to take a look at the new system.

SkyBlueCanvas, a ray of hope to open source small scale web cms?

August 5th, 2008

SkyBlueCanvas, a relatively new open source cms released in March this year has now reached a milestone of 5000 downloads. Being something I just recently stumbled upon, it has got my attention (primarily because it is aimed for smaller scale websites with “less than three admins and less than 100 pages”).

The classic issue that many (I included) have been fighting with regarding most Open Source cms out there has been the complexity of them. CMSMadeSimple (a personal favourite), Joomla, Drupal and many more are jampacked with features and options that the average small business or personal website never will use nor need.

So what is it all about?

Even if SkyBlueCanvas is aimed for smaller sites does not, by any means, mean that it is short of features. Formbuilder, photogallery, News, Events, Articles and support of multiple easy to skin html/css layouts are just a few examples of what it offers. And I have to say, I’m quite impressed about what I see in the demo. Never before have I seen such a easy-to-use and clear skin manager in a free CMS. Used to the way too difficult to find html manager of CMSMadeSimple it do seem like a major improvement in usability (although I am sure we all will rejoice the day when we can use backspace also in online editors). The WYSIWYG (and the content editor in general) looks good and clear on my 22 inch screen. And the same can actually be said about the backend in general; It just looks plain good and airey.

Of course it lacks some of the mods and functions of the bigger systems, but that is, after all, the whole point of it.

Does it work well? Sorry, I can’t say at this point. But it sure looks good on basis of the demo. I will without doubt test it out when given the chance, so stay tuned for an in-depth review coming later. Until that day, go and play around with the demo and see for yourself.

Huge list of creative ads compiled by Jacob Cass

August 1st, 2008

Jacob Cass made an incredibly effort compiling if not all, at least a huge amount, of all the creative advertisements that have been circulating the web lately.

I feature a couple of my favourites here. For the whole list visit Jacobs Blog.

The grand design prize of Sweden was given to eye tracking screen manufacturer Tobii

July 29th, 2008

Tobii, manufacturer and researcher of TFT Monitors with integrated eye tracking were recently given the grand swedish design price of 250 000 kr.

A well deserved prize in my opinion, and one of the biggest braketroughs in web accessibility for disabled users. It would be interesting to test one of these screens, as those supposedly should work quite well. At least the feedback from testing groups have been all over positive. The idea behind them is quite simple, the screen tracks the movements of your eyes, which makes it possible for the user to navigate trough the page using his eyes only.

More about the screens on the tobii website.

Although i do not think that this will spread like wildfire to the homes of all disabled users, I do think that we are certainly on the right path on making the web accessible for everyone.

Pantone Color bridge on the web

July 28th, 2008

For those of you who don’t own a real life copy of the Pantone Color Bridge there is an online version available at Scribd.

The link to the Color Bridge. And the same here in different format.

Im sure all the professionals know how to use this essential color tool, but just to sum it up:
This color bridge shows the whole Euroscale Pantone color palette and the closest CMYK values to each color.

It is an extremely handy and fast tool for everyone who don’t have the real thing at hands.
